RSS For Newbies

What exactly is RSS and how does it affect you and your affiliate website?

RSS stands for "Really Simple Syndication" or "Rich Site Summary." It is used to publish frequently updated content such as
  • Blogs
  • News Headlines
  • Podcasts
What it does is syndicate your site's content. This means that your visitors don't have to come to you to see your content because it's delivered right to them.

RSS can change every website on the internet into it's own mini-broadcasting system by sending out videos, audio feeds, and content to people who have subscribed to receive it.

Many websites have yet to optimize their sites for RSS so you can get an advantage by doing this ASAP. You will also see an improvement in your site's traffic and a noticeable increase in your site's rankings.

There are a couple of versions available:
  • RSS 2.0 is the most common and it's used for news and blog feeds and podcasting.
  • Atom is newer and provides content in .xml format.
A "feed" ia an RSS document. It either contains a summary of content from a site or the full text from a site. When you subscribe to an RSS feed, you'll receive the content as it changes in your "news reader."

Publishers of blogs, news, and podcasts can publish their content to different places at the same time via RSS syndication.

How do you know if a site has an RSS feed?

There will either be a link displayed or an orange button like this RSS Button

Other uses for RSS:
  • Notification of new products
  • Newsletter issues including email newsletters
  • Weather alerts
  • New members in a group
Should you put RSS feeds on your website?

Well, there are 2 things that an RSS feed added to your website will do.
  1. Get more traffic to your site
  2. Distribute your changing content automatically
Blogs do well in search engines because they are frequently updated with fresh, relevant content. Search engines "crawl" blogs quicker and this helps your pagerank in Google.

The best way to promote your website is by having a blog and putting the RSS feed on your static webpages to have frequently updated content there as well.

It's actually a very good idea to set up a blog and RSS feed for each of your main keywords. Any major topic or subject on your site should have a Blog and RSS feed to compliment the content.

Fully optimized, they should each have seperate IP addresses. You can use free Blog sites like Bloglines (Ask Jeeves) or Blogger (Google). Use unique content in these blogs and link to high PR quality sites.

Another thing you can do is place good quality feeds directly on your site that relate to the subject of your webpages. These feeds will provide valuable content to your readers as well as giving the search engines more from your site.

To search for RSS feeds just go to Windowas Live Search and type in your keywords with "&Format=RSS" on the end.

There are PHP feeds and Javascript feeds that you can add to your websites. With PHP feeds, the search engines look at it like it's a part of your content.

Adding PHP feeds and Javascript feeds are beyond the scope of this webpage but I have videos in the making that will be added to my affiliate webmaster's course if you'd like to learn more about adding RSS feeds to your site.
